Continued Brisbane Growth Sparks Renovations of its Major Venues

June 22, 2018

As Australia’s third largest city, Brisbane has long been the ’little sibling’ to larger cities Sydney and Melbourne, who will still refer to it as a ‘Big Country Town’ (especially during Origin season)! However, on the contrary, Brisbane’s growth over the past few decades has been, and continues to be, nothing short of astounding. Comparing photos of the Brisbane skyline even 10 years ago would have a foreigner guessing if the two images were of the same city. Brisbane has become just as much of an international hub for tourism, sport, art, music and culture as its older siblings and continues to rise in the ranks to that of its global counterparts.  Not to mention, Queensland has a full roster of homegrown talent making their mark both nationally and internationally in all of these areas.

Furthermore, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are having a bit of a ‘moment’ around the world. International artists play their shows here and then head to lush rainforests, pristine beaches and stunning views of the coast and Hinterland. We’re becoming a tour stop on everyone’s agenda. This international attention has brought new development to support the increase in population and tourism in the region, notably by the Commonwealth Games this past April.

As a security company with over 20 years of experience in large-scale events, we have been privy to the development of Brisbane and greater Queensland’s major entertainment venues. Over this time, our team has serviced events at venues including Suncorp Stadium, The Gabba, QSAC, 1300Smiles Stadium, and the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

A testament to the growth in our own homegrown Queensland talent, as well as a much-loved stop for international touring artists, is the announcement of major developments for two of Brisbane’s top entertainment venues that we service:

New $150m Cultural Centre Theatre

The Queensland Government recently announced a $150 million addition, a 1500-1700 seat theatre, to be a part of QPAC. When complete in 2022, it will be the nation’s largest theatre complex and performing arts centre. Queensland’s Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk says the venue will support the state’s four home companies – Queensland Ballet, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Queensland Theatre and will provide access to all five QPAC venues.

“Building a new theatre is a must to ensure we can keep attracting even more big shows and more visitors to our capital city,” Palaszczuk said.

Massive Renovation Plans for The Gabba

To keep up with the growing demands of event-goers, and especially cricketers and their fans, The Gabba has announced renovation plans that will see their venue climb the worldwide oval ranks. According to ABC’s Matt Wordsworth, “Inside The Gabba, the current viewing experience can be hum drum and lacking comfort, compared with the sparkling new venues in Adelaide and Perth.” In the renovation plans are a new plaza entry, larger scoreboards, six new gates, a grassy park that connects to a new train station and an advanced “media halo” projecting above spectators heads. A Stadiums Queensland representative cited the pressure the state was under to upgrade facilities, “In the last five to seven years every major oval stadium across Australia has undergone a significant upgrade, redevelopment or replacement.” According to the plan, the new development would happen over next 15 to 20 years at a currently undetermined cost, but Queensland Sports Minister Mick de Brenni says he expects a much shorter time frame. As our event centres and stadiums advance their venues, CAP Security Services will be ready to adapt to changes. We are equipped to handle any type of crowd with detailed plans to ensure the safety of large stadiums and both local and international artists.

With over two decades of large-venue experience, CAP Security Services understands the current challenges facing Brisbane’s entertainment centres. We’re excited to welcome new developments that will pave the way for more events from around the world and more fans able to watch their favourite acts and sports teams.
