What a year! As the lights go out on 2019, and we look to the new year ahead, it would be remiss not to reflect on the highlights of a successful and fun-filled year. Even after more than 25 years delivering security services to our state’s favourite venues, the team at CAP Security Services never takes for granted the rewarding opportunities we have working with Queensland’s best events, across music, sports and the arts. Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights of our 2019 events calendar.
The music scene was literally packed to the rafters with events on all year long, kicking off with Brit icon Bryan Ferry serenading the folks at A Day on the Green at Sirromet Wines Mt Cotton. Phil Collins blew away a crowd of 40,000 at Suncorp Stadium in January, and in February we saw the return of Eminem’s notoriously rowdy crowd to his long awaited show at QSAC. March saw a jam-packed month of classics with the Whitney Houston Tribute show at QPAC and the Kylie Minogue Golden Tour at Sirromet. Matt Corby blessed the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre with his soulful music, before winter turned the volume down on music for a couple of months.
The volume went back up when Aussie legend Shannon Noll stole the show at the Hamilton Hotel in August, marking the start of warmer months to come. In November, the long-awaited U2 Joshua Tree tour hit Suncorp Stadium, while Rob Thomas delighted fans at A Day on the Green along with special guests Pete Murray and Daryl Braithwaite. To round out the year, the Australian Bee Gees will show us why they’re ranked the best tribute band in the world by the Las Vegas Review Journal this weekend (Dec 20).
Brisbane Showgrounds was host to some rocking music festivals in 2019. We were lost in the magic of Good Life’s Lost City Festival in March listening to Kayzo, Will Sparks and DJ Tigerlily. As September warmed up, we found ourselves sampling craft beer and dancing to Thundamentals and Ruby Fields for two long days of the Beer InCider experience. After some patient waiting, we welcomed the return of RNB Fridays Live in November, bringing us headlining artists Janet Jackson, 50 Cent, the Black Eyed Peas and Jason Derulo. It’s safe to say, our ears were spoiled in 2019.
As usual, the first couple of months of the year had us on our toes with cricket and soccer galore at The Gabba and Suncorp Stadium respectively, and that was just the start of a year of incredible sporting action across our world class venues.
Also at Suncorp Stadium, we saw the QLD Reds enter a tough season of Rugby, and the NRL Magic Round brought 16 teams and 8 games to the stadium in May. We can’t wait for this marquee event in 2020. The Wallabies had a smashing victory over Argentina in their home test match in July, while our Maroons stopped NSW dead in their tracks in Game 1 of the State of Origin. Our boys went on to lose the series but proved they’re at their best in a home game at Suncorp.
Last weekend we saw the curtain come down on Anthony Mundine’s boxing career when he announced his retirement after a surprise defeat to John Wayne Parr at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. A great sporting career comes to an end after eight seasons of Rugby League and 19 years of professional boxing.
Over at The Gabba, a great season of cricket kicked off with Australia beating Sri Lanka in the first test and our Aussies have just won another test at The Gabba against Pakistan, showing their love for our famed Brisbane venue. Over to the AFL and our Brisbane Lions who had a cracking season and some huge games at The Gabba, to reach #2 on the ladder. We can’t wait to see what they do in 2020.
Nissan Arena saw the Queensland Firebirds put up a good fight in their 2019 season, before welcoming the Brisbane Bullets to their new home turf. The first home game for the Bullets at Nissan Arena was held in October and saw them beat the Cairns Taipans in a 90-74 victory.
In Townsville, the Entertainment and Convention Centre welcomed the legendary Harlem Globetrotters in April, while over at 1300Smiles Stadium the Cowboys put in a valiant effort and kept fans happy, despite a disappointing end to their NRL season.
Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) kept the punters happy with an outstanding line-up of race days throughout the year. Mekka Wednesday celebrations bring out our young race go’ers in droves, while the Spring Carnival at Eagle Farm is a highlight with the pinnacle being Melbourne Cup Festivities. Rounding out a fabulous year at Eagle Farm is the Road to Magic Millions Raceday on December 28.
Events & Culture
When it came to finding a great show or event in 2019, our clients did not disappoint. Suncorp Stadium brought us the explosive, high-adrenaline Nitro Circus early in the year. Tough Mudder kicked off in May and saw thousands of entrants dragging themselves through the mud for a fun and physical challenge. Many of those same fitness fanatics were seen flying up and down the aisles at the Gabba’s Stadium Stomp Stair Climb Challenge in July.
Those looking for a more peaceful activity could enjoy the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial Of Contemporary Art at QAGOMA or the line-up of incredible shows at QPAC, including Bolshoi Ballet’s Spartacus, Cabaret de Paris and CHICAGO the musical. We even got to enjoy the Book of Mormon – and if you haven’t already heard, they’re heading back in January 2020 for an encore!
To bring the year to a close, the Gabba joined 60 cities across the globe by taking part in the World’s Biggest Sleepout on December 7 to raise funds for homelessness prevention and management.
In 2020, we’re excited to start work at Cbus Super Stadium, the premiere venue for sports and entertainment on the Gold Coast, providing security, events staff and traffic control services.
The team at CAP Security Services is proud to have ensured you were all safe while enjoying the entertainment Queensland had on offer in 2019. Bring on a new decade and let’s do it all again! Keep up to date on our Facebook page to see what we’re up to in the new year.
