Staying Safe this Festive Season

November 30, 2017

As Security Guards, safety is in our blood and we like to ensure everyone is doing their best to maintain their own safety at all times. While Christmas is largely a time of love and joy, it’s also called the “Silly Season” for a reason. Research has shown that incidences of violence, property theft and other criminal offences spike substantially over the festive period. So, in the spirit of Christmas, we’d like to offer these tips and reminders for keeping yourselves, your loved ones, and your possessions safe this holiday season.

It’s a time of year when more alcohol is consumed, more money is spent on expensive items, there are holidays out of town, and parties to attend. It sounds like the most fun you’ve had all year and nothing could possibly go wrong. Well, we’d like to help you keep it that way.

It seems unfair, even outrageous, that law-abiding citizens should have to take measures (sometimes expensive and inconvenient measures) to protect themselves from crime. However, unfortunately it is the way of the world and if you’re ever the victim of crime, whether it’s serious or petty, you don’t want to feel that you could have easily prevented it from occurring with some simples measures.

So, here are a just a few simple tips for a crime-free and stress-free Christmas.

1.Shops and businesses are more at risk of crime during the Christmas period. If you’re a business owner, ensure you’re particularly cautious with security measures, including not leaving cash on the premises. Make sure yourself and your staff are aware and up to date with procedures in case of a robbery, including armed robbery.  CAP Security Services can offer a security consultation, or assist with guard patrols or CCTV Monitoring if required.

2.If you’re planning any big events for the end of the year, such as an office Christmas party or New Year’s Eve party, make sure your event is secure. The more alcohol people consume, the more vulnerable they become. A security guard will take some of the pressure off the host by providing a safe environment for all guests. So if you’d like to relax and let off some steam with your colleagues, we recommend hiring a bit of extra help.

3.Whether you’re going away this year or not, make sure you secure your house. Property offences, including break-ins and vandalism, are more common over the Christmas season. We recommend you don’t leave valuable items in parts of the home that are visible from the outside of your home through windows or glass doors. Out of sight is out of mind for the criminally inclined. If you know and trust your neighbours, it’s a good idea to let them know if you’re going away so they can report to you on any suspicious activity at your house, or call the police if necessary.  But neighbours can’t always be on the lookout, so be sure to consider a home alarm system.

Here is one final thought to leave you with. The table below reveals the substantial spike in violent crimes committed between 9.00pm New Year’s Eve and 3.00am on New Year’s Day. These figures were sourced from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (for five consecutive years from 2011/2012 to 2015/2016), but are consistent with reported figures throughout Australia, including Queensland. That’s why you’ll see CAP Security Services present at New Year’s Eve parties all around Brisbane and regional Queensland, from clubs and bars to private functions, as well as safeguarding businesses and properties for owners who fear the revelry will impact on them.

Hopefully, these statistics will encourage you to stay conscientious, and consider security for your home, business and events this festive season.
